Millones de personas, en los lugares más recónditos del mundo siguieron ayer el funeral del Rey del Pop, más endiosado que nunca y a punto de ser canonizado en una ceremonia, la de ayer, que tras la confusión de los últimos días causó sorpresa por su emotividad, transparencia y fantástica organización. Al fin y al cabo, es verdad, se trataba de despedir al artista más universal de todos los tiempos.

Me gustó escuchar a todos cantando aquel mítico “We are the world”. Me gustó el niño Shaheen. Me gustó que fuera una ceremonia negra, protagonizada por afro americanos, y me gustó el histrionismo del reverendo.

Pride of London

There will be pride and enjoyment this weekend in London. The 4th of July (Independence Day in the USA, independence gay's day in the UK!) is the date chosen to celebrate the Pride Parade and diverse events all around the Londoner West End. The Parade will go from baker Street to Trafalgar Square, where the Festival will commence and so will be all around Soho area, where the streets will be closed just to celebrate the most colourful day of the year!

I felt that all the way was just to get there. To come, on one bright, lively day to Brighton. Our encounter was unexpected and sudden. There you were, the my never overstimated sea side!

Los ingleses llaman Carnaval a cualquier tipo de romería o festejo al aire libre y así caribeñs, latinoamericanos, africanos disfrazan sus cuerpos y caminan sus procesiones paganas por esta ciudad, entre los meses de julio y septiembre. Toca el turno al Festival del Támesis, el más londinense de todos, pero no por ello el mas conocido. Lo mejor del Festival, su entorno, entre los puentes de Westminster y el Tower Bridge. Música en vivo, deportes, baile, películas, concursos de fotografía, decenas de actividades más para para los “locals” que para los turistas. Creo…

In Venezuela...

When the people of the town open their eyes that morning they couldn’t relieve what had happened… An enormous mountain of gold was just there, on the main square, in fornt of their blinded ayes.

As every day in this little, beautiful village in the coast of Venezuela, people had gone to bed at 11.00 pm, after had done what they usually did: Nothing! No hopes, no ambition, only sun, fish and dozens of kids everywhere. Still, they where happy.

They had never watched television, they had never surfed on the Internet -actually, they didn’t know anything about the Internet-, they had only enjoyed the “grace of the nature”, the natural life-style, further from politics, fashion or the economic index.

But that day… that day, when they woke up, all of them knew that their lives had changed, just because they had the biggest mountain of gold in front of their eyes. So, they hit the jackpot!

They danced, they laughed, they cried and, at the end, they decided not to touch it, just leave it there for the pleasure of their eyes. Just leave it there to feed their imagination and, the most incredible thing happened… nobody asked where this gold had come from. And, perhaps even more incredible, the town is still there, people are still doing nothing and the mountain of gold remains the same height. Wouldn’t you like to live here?

Mañana toca enfrentarse a Rusia, con su segundo uniforme, color oro, por ser el equipo visitante. Las esperanzas de llegar a la final del domingo son infinitas…

The London Festival of Architecture starts today and, for the next month will offer over 600 exhibitions, lectures, public space installations, guided walks, bicycle rides, boat tours, parties, design workshops and debates. The organisation is exhorting visitors to take a fresh look at London, so the theme of this year's Festival is Fresh!

Psycho buildings and other events at the Southbank Centre
It’s probably the most dared and unique architectural exhibition, which marks The Hayward’s 40th anniversary and brings the work of artists who create “habitat-like structures and architectural environments”. The exhibition will be on display until the 25th of August and it will include films, talks and other events.

Arquitectura y/o arte a orillas del Támesis. Hasta el próximo 25 de agosto el centro cultural del Southbank londinense nos ofrece una exhibición contemporánea, interactiva e inteligente con la arquitectura como inspiración y fantasía. Diez artistas de diferentes países (Cuba, Reino Unido y Corea, entre otros) han transformado el espacio inetrior y exterior de la galería The Hayward. Exposiciones audiovisuales, charlas y la participación de artistas y arquitectos de renombre internacional invitan a pasarse más de una vez por este centro, situado a orillas del Támesis y junto a otros emblemáticos edificios de la zona como el Royal Festival Hall.

La vida londinense de los Próceres de la Independencia
Aunque me queda ya quizás un poco lejos, no recuerdo haber estudiado en la escuela muchas de las andanzas de “nuestros próceres”. Y ahora, andando y andando, parece que todo el mundo ha pasado por Londres; y si pasaste por aquí y tu vida ha dejado algo para la posteridad, te recordarán con una placa conmemorativa en el frente de la casa que hayas habitado. Así encontramos, sobre todo, casas en las que vivieron o murieron, o ambas cosas, escritores, pintores, políticos, y un largo etcétera.

Y andando y andando, decía, un día leí: Francisco de Miranda, Precursor of Latin American Independence lived here 1802 – 1810. Es decir, “Aquí vivió Francisco de Miranda, Precursor de la Independencia de Venezuela”.

Y claro, sólo entonces descubrí que “El Precursor de la Independencia”, aquél que todo venezolano recuerda en una de sus últimas fotos en la cárcel de La Carraca (Cádiz), vivió en Londres durante ocho años, tenía aquí su casa y su familia (mujer y dos hijos) y esta casa era, además, según sus palabras, “el lugar-base para la independencia y libertades del continente latinoamericano”. Fue en el número 58 de Grafton Way donde Miranda recibió a otros dos personajes que marcaron la historia de Latinoamérica, Simón Bolívar y Andrés Bello. Ellos fueron los dos primeros diplomáticos enviados desde los nuevos Estados para conseguir el reconocimiento británico. Miranda los incitó entonces a pensar en términos continentales. “Nuestra causa –les dijo– tiene en este país innumerables amigos; y es imposible no tenerlos donde la razón y la justicia tienen seguidores. Nosotros estamos comprometidos en presencia del Universo, y no podemos, sin descrédito, desviarnos del glorioso camino que hemos trazado para América”.

Miranda dejó Londres en 1810 para ayudar a consolidar la Primera República de Venezuela. Fue capturado por las autoridades españolas y enviado a la prisión de La Carraca, donde murió, en 1816, lejos de su casa y de su familia.

En 1978, el entonces presidente venezolano, Carlos Andrés Pérez –años después encarcelado por corrupción, pero esa es otra historia– adquirió la propiedad en nombre del Estado junto a otras casas adyacentes. El número 52 aloja a personal de la embajada. El número 54, Carabobo, es la oficina militar, el número 56, que lleva el nombre de Andrés Bello (personaje que también vivió en Londres durante 19 años), es la sede del Consulado y el 58, Miranda House, es la oficina cultural de la Embajada y sede de la biblioteca. Además, tras estas casas se ha construido el Bolívar Hall un auditorio y centro cultural que alberga exposiciones, conferencias y distintos eventos culturales que acercan la idiosincrasia latinoamericana al público londinense.

Los que vivimos en Londres estamos pasando unos días de felicidad absoluta. Como dicen por aquí “El sol se ha puesto su sombrero”! O mejor… “Bien hecho, sol”. Anuncian un buen fin de semana, con barbacoas por doquier, fiesta, parques y mucha gente colorada por los efectos del verano adelantado. Anuncian también una estación veraniega de las más calurosas de los últimos años (nada difícil, por cierto, porque 2007 no dejó asomar el calor). Por lo pronto, a disfrutar de las cálidas temperaturas y sólo una petición: Que dure!

Galicia... in Venezuela

EL MINISTRO GALLEGO. Que el Gobierno de Hugo Chávez cuente con un gallego en sus filas, dirigiendo la cultura del país precisamente -con la fama y los chistes que de gallegos se oyen por aquellas latitudes- aún supera aquello del gallego en la luna. Francisco (Farruco) Sesto Novás, ministro del Poder Popular para la Cultura de Venezuela, nació en Vigo en 1943 y emigró a la República suramericana en 1962. Arquitecto de profesión, es también pintor, dibujante y escritor, y ha sido Profesor Titular en la Universidad Central de Venezuela durante 25 años. En el ya más que globalizado debate de la revolución bolivariana, entre la polarización que viven los venezolanos, la información y la desinformación, Sesto, cómo no, es objeto de críticas feroces –basta con “guguelear” su nombre para comprobarlo-. Pero existe un libro suyo que quizás pueda darnos alguna pista sobre su persona: Por qué soy chavista? (Ensayos, 2002).
